Husky vocals set to a melodic guitar lured me into the indie track, “Awake Me,” by The X-Flowers band, a Las Vegas-based alternative rock group. In vein with ‘90s grunge music, the track’s quiet-loud-quiet cadence pulled me out of a doomscrolling trance. This song creeped into my head like a ghostly dream, a somber vignette of anguished grief packed with a punch.
The X-Flower’s music stirred a whirlwind of nostalgia, transporting me back to when I was 5-years-old, memorizing Alanis Morrisette’s album, Jagged Little Pill. Immediately, I added The X-Flower’s song to my music playlist. That’s when I noticed two of their songs, “Simply Awfully” and “Awake Me” have reached over 10,000 streams on Spotify. That in itself is a huge achievement.
Still, the rising rock band’s musicianship deserves their flowers. Just hear me out.
With the rise of AI production, “Awake Me” captures a raw human energy. The unpretentious authenticity and sonically balanced soundscape is a refreshing reprieve from the ongoing slew of prompt-to-song media.
The X-Flowers released “Awake Me” on their First Bloom EP in 2025. This spellbinding song exists because of lyricists Alexxis Ryan and Ryan Anderson along with Andrew Beldy and Andy Beldy Jr., who recorded and mixed the track at Electric Shop Recording Studio.
To me, the song echoes the unapologetic female rage that surged through influential alt-rock bands like Hole, Pixies, and Veruca Salt. Countering the Trad Wife trend, punk rock raises women’s unfiltered voices, serving as a powerful force that challenges and disrupts social norms.
Lyrically, “Awake Me” touches on themes of heartache (“heart is blue”), deception (“masked intent”) and abandonment (“leave me here to bleed).” Together, the imagery paints a visceral portrait of a complex love story.
Alexxis Ryan’s raspy and textured tone delivers a top-tier grunge lament. The melodic guitar strumming the verses is dangerously catchy. Oscillating between a whispery lilt and a crescendoing chorus, the tension simmers. The hook takes the song to the next level. Thunderous drums and an electrifying guitar spark a dynamic storm.
Currently, The X-Flowers band comprises four members: Alexxis Anderson (vocals and guitar), Ken Lota (guitar), Caydence Johnston (backing vocals and bass), and Alex Katopodis (drums). “Awake Me” is only one of their mosh-worthy anthems. Earlier this year, the emerging rock group dropped their latest headbanger, “Tilted.”
The talented rockers have graced the stage of several local staples such as The Space, First Friday and Taverna Costera. As the Las Vegas music scene continues to grow, it shows promise for rising artists. From The Killers to Imagine Dragons, many Vegas indie rock groups have catapulted into the mainstream media. So it’s safe to say that local punk rock bands, like The X-Flowers, shouldn’t be overlooked.
