AOTW May 1st: Sunday Mourning

Hello Rockstars!

Today I’m going to be telling you about Artist of the Week alternative rock band Sunday Mourning!

Here’s their story in their own words, enjoy!

VMS: “When did you start writing and performing your music, your backstory and current lineup.”

Sunday Mourning: “We became a band in October of 2022 and we had our first practice October 29th of 2022. It wasn’t until March of the next year that we had our next show and yet we were still not ready. During the summer we basically spent most of every week together growing and practicing. Over the summer, our old guitarist was consistently unavailable to perform but driven by our passion we decided to play with a variety of subs depending on who we could find at the time. Jeffrey played his first show with us in July of 2023 and brought an energy to the stage that was foreign to and admired by us. When the time came to find a new permanent guitarist, Jeffrey was the first to reach out. As he began writing lead parts we realized he was the only one for us and, as of a few days, he is our permanent lead guitarist.

Over the past few months we’ve also began to throw our own shows and we’ve found a passion in creating safe spaces for both new and experienced bands. Both preforming and putting on shows is the highlight of our lives and we are so grateful to be able to pursue it. We have many shows to look forward to in which we are playing with local bands we’ve looked up to for a very long time. Before we had even been offered our first gig, we looked for advice in those we admired. Jared from Pure Sport once told us that each performance is a new chance to grow and learn. There is nothing truer than that, and that advice has kept us going with each new obstacle and opportunity.”

VMS: “What artist or bands inspire you and your sound.”

Sunday Mourning: “The question ‘What genre are you?’ looms over our heads daily. Each time we write something new it seems to be something different than the thing we wrote before. We find ourselves inspired by the people behind the music, rather than the music itself. We all have different musical role models. As a whole, we look up to a variety of performers like, Brody Dalle, Milo Aukerman, Freddy Mercury, The Runaways, The Doors, and The Killers.”

VMS: “What’s your writing process and inspiration for your music.”

Sunday Mourning: “Our songs usually start with a jam session, a part someone brings in that others build on top of, or a fully pre-written song that someone brings in, which we all expand on. Our music comes from a place of passion and often a place of hurt. There are some songs that we preform only once as they serve as an outlet for our strong emotions at the time. Something’s stories only meant to be told once and remembered later. When it comes to the music we preform regularly we each have a personal connection to each work and we hope that the audience experiences a similar feeling.”

VMS: “I love your raw energy you ladies and gentlemen bring to the stage. What is your favorite song you do or what’s a song that means a lot to you.”

Sunday Mourning:

Emmersen: “I love Disparity because it is so engaging to perform, the entire song is so dramatic and intense and I always feel 10 times stronger every time we play it.”

Jeffrey: “Chorus of Deliverance because I have the most creative freedom on that one. I play it differently everyone and I think that’s pretty neat.”

Trey: “The rhythmic variation in Prey makes it my favorite. “Crowd react good, I like the way it gets those peeps moving and it feels nice on the hands to play””

Cyenna: “I would pick Smother because it was the first bass line where i explored rhythm in a drop-D tuning! I love music that I can sway to and Smother is definitely a swaying song.”

Molly: “My favorite is prey because there’s so much energy in it, it’s so fun to play with the time being in 5.”

VMS: “What do you want your audience to feel and experience at one of your live shows.”

Sunday Mourning: “There’s a term called collective effervescence, which refers to an overwhelming feeling of emotion found in a group of people enjoying music or an experience together. The name Sunday Mourning plays on the concept of music being a religious experience. We want our audience to feel anything and everything. Our songs come from a variety of places within us from sadness to spite. We hope that our audience feels and takes in it all.”

VMS: “Which local artist would you like to work with and why.”

Sunday Mourning: “Our first outing as a band was a Pure Sport and Elevated Underground’s show and having the chance to play with both of them at the place we first saw them was unreal. From here forward we would love to play with anyone and everyone who is willing.”

VMS: “What’s your overall theme or message of your music.”

Sunday Mourning: “Our music is an observation of both our experiences and our surroundings. For the most part, each song is related to the feminine experience from the good to the bad. Each song is full of passion so i’d say that overall we are a band with something to say, what the audience hears is up to them, and to us; that’s the best part.”

VMS: “What does the future hold for Sunday Mourning.”

Sunday Mourning: “Playing with Sunday mourning has been the best part of highschool for all of us, but as graduation creeps closer we become more and more certain of the role it will play from here. Molly, Cyenna and Jeffery are all staying in vegas. Emmersen is going to Reno and as for Trey, we aren’t sure yet: In a perfect world Emmersen and Trey will both go to UNR to continue practicing and playing with the band but alas at times life is larger than we hope and expect.”

VMS Thoughts:

What I absolutely love about Sunday Mourning is not only their raw magnetic stage presence, and one of a kind shows, but the fact that I cannot necessarily consider them just one genre. I love that their core is rock, but you can see so many influences in their songs, which I think is so incredibly important for any band to be willing to experiment with sounds. I also appreciate that what  wonderful musicians they, they bring such a an amazing raw energy like have been performing their whole lives, that sometimes you forget that some of them are going to graduating high school this year. They have such an amazing passion and fire in everything that they do, that I’m genuinely excited what the future holds for them! It’s also inspiring to see something truly unique in this industry,  and I’m happy to say it’s Sunday Mourning!

I encourage you to go see their show they have coming up on May 3rd, they are definitely one of those bands that you have to see live to really get that full magic,  they are truly transcendental experience.
