Here’s their story in their own words.

VMS: “When did you start writing and performing your music.”

The Patterns: “Josh (guitar) Jake (keyboards, vocals) they grew up writing music together in Arizona. They recorded an album in Nashville and then moved to Vegas and met Alec (drums) and Anthony (bass guitar).”

VMS: “What artist or bands inspire you and your sound.”

The Patterns: “We like a lot of different genres but we try to sound like psychedelic pop bands like XTC, Alvvays, The Beach Boys, and Blur.”

VMS: “What’s your writing process or inspiration for your music.”

The Patterns: “For the most part we write chords first, melody, and then lyrics. We try to emphasize writing interesting chord progressions and making catchy melodies. Josh and Jake write songs both on their own and in collaboration. Alec and Anthony write their own drum and bass parts.”

VMS: “I love your songs “When we’re Alone”, “R.O.C.”, and “Tea Time of the Living Dead”. What is the inspiration behind these songs.”

The Patterns: “When We’re Alone” tries to mix a Beach Boys love ballad with My Bloody Valentine. “ROC” is Jake’s attempt at a noise pop song like Sonic Youth and Pavement. “Tea Time of the Living Dead” is about working a 9-5 job and is inspired by the imaginary goth rock band Sadie Killer and the Suspects from Steven Universe.

VMS: “What do you want your audience to feel and experience at one of your live shows.”

The Patterns: “We want all of our songs to be different and unique. We want to give our audience variety and to make every song a story. We’re always trying to play songs that fit the environment of a show.”

VMS: “Tell me about your EP “The Noise Room”. What was your writing process and message of this album.”

The Patterns: “For “The Noise Room” we were looking for a more aggressive or noisy sound and we were reaching for more 90’s influences after our 60’s inspired debut album. All the songs were written and recorded in Vegas in our house.”

VMS: “Which local artist would you like to work with and why.”

The Patterns: “We’ve played with a bunch of great bands here, but we would love to play with Past Self and Elevated Undergrounds. We really enjoy their gothy, theatrical live shows.”

VMS:”What’s your overall theme or message of your music.”

The Patterns: “We want to tell a unique story with each song. We love albums with a lot of variety, and we try to recreate that in our songwriting.”

VMS: “What does the future hold for The Patterns.”

The Patterns: “We recently joined The Pigeon Hat Collective who have helped us get more shows and find our place in the local scene. Right now we’re working on our next album which has been a large part of our live sets.”

What I’ve always loved about The Patterns is how they are not afraid to dip into different genres while always maintaining the core of who they are as a band. Their songs feel if the Cure / Arcade Fire / Ben Folds and 90s rock had a love child, I’m pretty sure it would be The Patterns. I already love the musical journey their albums take me on, which is refreshing in a world of just buying singles, which is fine, but going on the adventure of an album from start to finish is truly like no other feeling I’ve ever had. It’s the best way to get into the psyche of the band and The Patterns are already masters of that. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for them, I think their evolution will be amazing and I am definitely going to be sticking around for the journey.
