Today I’m going to be telling you about our new Artist of the Week,
Singer, Writer, Dancer, (overall Renaissance Woman) BAI! (IG:@notyourbai_)
Here is her story in her own words, enjoy!
VMS: “When did you start writing and performing your music, and What’s your backstory.”
BAI: “I feel like I’ve always been creative, but was so shy that I wouldn’t openly say anything about it. It was just something natural to me. There would always be journals I kept of poems or think pieces I just never showed anyone what was in there. I started performing when I turned 18, my very first show I made $100 and was like wow I can do this?! I had always done music in school doing orchestra but was always way too shy to audition for choir. In college i had some friends that encouraged me to sing and get out of my comfort zone and from there I started making videos online! It led to me writing my own music and just being open about being an artist.”
VMS: “What artist or bands inspire you and your sound.”
BAI: “Wow there’s so many! I love sza, jhene aiko, Ambré, alex Isley! Victoria Monet, Beyoncé! The Isley brothers, KEM,Sade! Heavy rotation on these artists. I specifically see what all makes each of them unique and try to apply that to my own music.”
VMS: “What’s your writing process and inspiration for your lyrics.”
BAI: “I would say my process can be slow to some and I’m very calculated with lyrics and writing. That’s before I even go to the studio. Once I’m there I like to listen back and make changes as I go. That might be a word or a the whole hook! I like to try and catch the vibe of the song and match it with the lyrics. I’ll even sit on ideas because of perfectionism.
Everyday I’ll take something I hear or a phrase from a movie and take it then try to make something new or explain what it means to me in a song. My inspiration really comes from those around me. Dance is so important to my process too. Seeing how someone responds in their body to certain songs is really inspiring.”
VMS: “I love your songs “Dirty”, “Stargirl” and “Balance”. What is the inspiration or story behind these songs.”
BAI: ” “Dirty” was inspired by moving to Vegas coming from Indianapolis and experience this different self awareness of women around me. I think the lyrics explain me really embracing my sexuality and femininity. That it’s okay to wanna be “Dirty”. We all get nasty from time to time. Let’s talk about it! I also really wanted a song that girls feel sexy to and can vibe on the pole or in their heels. That’s when I feel most accomplished as an artist. When someone genuinely wants to create with their own body to my music.
“Stargirl” was while I was deciding that I was going to continue to pursue music regardless of what others had to say. Even family! It may not make me money but it makes me happy and confident. “You too high , please come down they say” was really speaking to them really. Don’t knock my happiness cause I’m in the clouds lol the sky is my limit not you and your opinions.

VMS: “What do you want your audience to feel and experience at one of your live shows.”
BAI: “I want them to feel comfortable and relaxed. The set would be enticing yet sexy and classy. When I think of shows that I would want mine to be I think of Sade, jhene and kehlani I love how they perform. A mixture of siren energy, fairy music bad bitches and good people!”
VMS: “Which local artist would you like to work with and why.”
BAI: “I like @jazzycadiente, I don’t know her personally or anything, but I see her videos and she has a great voice! @lunaelle her music is so good and I think we have similar writing styles. Last but not least is @tianashai! She’s amazing and I learn alot from her page. I got to work in her studio and she has great energy and ideas. I love seeing women in all parts of the industry like mixing and producing. She’s a goat Fr.”
VMS: “What’s your overall theme or message of your music.”
BAI: “Overall message is to love yourself! Keep your head up cause you’re a queen and break a few hearts along the way if you can.”
VMS: “Do you have a favorite song that you like to perform.”
BAI: I think “Stargirl” or “Like That” or “Dirty” would be fun to perform for a live crowd.”
VMS: “Do you have any crazy or interesting stories from working in the music scene.”
BAI: “Um watch out for the scams!! Everybody that say they know something don’t really know anything. If they do really know something they will go about approaching you professionally.”
VMS: “What does the future hold for BAI.”
BAI: “I’m working on some singles to release and more visuals! I hope to perform in Vegas soon. Other than that, imma keep creating! Stay tuned for new music next month!”
What I love about BAI and her music is her whole vibe! The otherworldly atmospheric chill vibe of her beats and production, complimenting her smooth vocals and beautifully intertwined into her wonderful lyrics about love, sex, following your dreams, self reflection, and finding your own voice. She has created a beautiful world and i love getting lost in it. Her authenticity is real and a breath of fresh air. I know this industry is hard for women to not only break into, but also be taken seriously. Luckily it seems that BAI is the one in control of her vision and destiny, and she definitely has the passion and drive to go far. I think she is an amazing woman and I’m so excited to see what the future holds for her. She is definitely an artist to watch, and why she’s my Artist of the Week.
